Sister of Sorrow Added to 2D Illustration!

October 23, 2020

My friend and fellow artist Bianca Olson designed these twistedly beautiful characters called Sisters of Sorrow that have always fascinated me. Her artwork (seen on the Left) is the particular sister that I chose to bring to life (seen on the Right). There was just something about how creepy and unique they looked with their elongated necks, torso and arms that that made me wonder how I would interpret these design choices.

One decision I was conscious of very early on was that I wanted to honor the decisions Bianca had made with the proportions of her character. While I would ultimately end up making a few adjustments here and there, I felt it was important that her core vision remained intact.

Bianca loves tattoos and has many of them herself. So I wanted to give her character several tattoos. I placed one on her chest, one on her lower stomach and one on her left arm. Now this proved an interested challenge because her arms are comprised of bone. Then I was reminded of the amazing game by Tim Schafer, Grim Fandango. In that game all the characters are skeletons and there is a tattoo artist that seems to inject the bone with ink. I took that idea and went a step further by having the tribal design actually carved INTO the bone itself.

As far as the other cosmetic choices, I felt my interpretation was a progression of the character. Where as Bianca's design was the starting point of the character, my design found her many years later where the world had turned into a much harsher place. It was a really fun project.

April Linework Updated!

August 23, 2015

So this piece is one I've always really liked. As it says in her description, I had originally intended this to be a full body illustration. The actual girl this piece was based on was a fan of Final Fantasy VIII, so I had planned to have her clothing reflect the look of one of the female characters from the game. Anyways, unforeseen time constraints arose and I ended up having to scrap the full body concept as well as the FFVIII costume idea and went with giving her a decorative Chinese top. As for abandoning the full body concept, I honestly feel it ended up working out for the best with putting her in a circular boarder.

For the update, I feel I wasn't able to finely hone the linework as much as I would have liked. When originally working on this piece it was a definite "fly by the seat of your pants" as far as the time frame went. So I've now gone back and really given it the extra time that I would have put into it and am very pleased with the final product.

Ghostly Pals Added to Character Design!

August 23, 2015

You know how sometimes you sit down with a blank piece of paper, not really sure what you're going to put on it and ideas and concepts just start flowing out onto the page? Well this character is the production of one such session. I drew this piece a few years ago and I always wanted to go back and really put some time and polish into it. So now I've done just that! I've gone back to the original inked drawing, re-scanned it and FINALLY give it the digital love it deserved.

Lokopelli Added to Character Design!

August 23, 2015

So, the inspiration behind this piece struck while driving through a neighborhood in Arcadia, CA. There was this house that had a metal Kokopelli hanging from it's awning (much like the one pictured on the Left) and it got me wondering just what exactly was the lore behind this character. After doing some proper research and learning about his musical ways, I was inspired to draw his son (who doesn't exist in any of the lore) but I felt it would be a fun character to create. Working in complete silhouette and researching proper musical notes were some fun memories I have of this piece.

Zephon Added to Character Design!

August 23, 2015

While crafting the story for my character Angie, I had to come up with a race of creatures that would have taken over the world she finds herself in. It was important that these creatures would have a very imposing silhouette. I ended up designing 9ft tall bird creatures that have lost the ability to fly after having been exiled underground after a war hundreds of years ago, but as such are very fast and very strong.

So Zephon is the general of the army of these bird warriors and is intended to be the primary antagonist of Angie's story. He's basically an unstoppable force and while surely not as powerful as Sauron from Lord of the Rings, I definitely felt he would be this fantasy world's equivalent.

Kimono Shaylee Added to Illustarations

August 23, 2015

Shaylee is a friend of mine who I ended up drawing this piece for. The funny thing is I don't think she has any particular interest in Japanese culture and so I'm always amused I took the piece in such a heavily Japanese centric direction. I think the real inspiration for this came from her having this short wild hair that I just felt like drawing and after I did, well the rest of the piece just sort of formed naturally.

She's a very free spirit so I purposefully made her kimono not as confined as your traditional kimono would be with it's many layers. The sleeves are inspired from that beautiful scene in House of Flying Daggers where the girl has those SUPER long sleeves and is able to manipulate things with them. While Shaylee's kimono doesn't have quite that ability I felt the overly long sleeves would add a nice touch. I plan on coloring this one hopefully sooner than later.

Soldier Revision has begun!

June 11, 2015

Several years ago I was taking a class where we were asked to draw a character on paper, scan it and then proceed to color the character digitally through Adobe Illustrator. I was quite a novice with digital coloring at the time and my inexperience with the program wasn't giving me the results I was looking for as far as the line work went.

A few months ago while looking through some of my older pieces, I came across this soldier and felt that the piece really deserved another shot. I've grown so much as an artist that I felt I could finally bring him to life in the way I had always wanted to. I'm very happy with the progress so far. Not only with the line work and the coloring, but finally being able to fix some of the small things that I always felt could use a bit of tweaking.

I'll be keeping you all updated on the progress of this piece here and eventually once it's done I'll be adding it to the Character Design page on my site.
